› October 2006 - Service Squad restores downtown wilderness area
|
On October 8, eight intrepid volunteers braved the Arizona wilderness to help restore the Rio Salado habitat near downtown Phoenix.
The Squad worked a small section of a steep bank overlooking the Salt River, digging up fountain grass. The grass was being removed because it’s not native to the area and spreads everywhere, taking what little moisture is available from the native plants.
The labor was harder than anyone expected. As time passed and the sun grew stronger, the pickaxes were being slung slower and the shovels weren’t biting as hard. At the end of it though, everyone agreed that it was worth it.
