G. Knight Memorial Scholarship
(PHOENIX, AZ) – Arizona
Federal Credit Union announced today the establishment
of the Leonard G. Knight Memorial Account to raise
funds for the Leonard Knight Memorial Scholarship.
Knight passed away on Monday, July 21.
A longtime community activist, Knight worked
to establish the Michael Hale Scholarship for
graduating high school seniors, an award named
in honor of Arizona Federal’s immediate
previous CEO.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Gail
and the Knight family,” said Ronald Westad,
Arizona Federal President & CEO. “Leonard’s
contributions made our community a better place
to live, work, and play. As an advocate for children
and education he was instrumental in establishing
self-empowerment for our young adults. Leonard
will be sorely missed by the entire Arizona Federal
family and by our community.”
Knight spent 20 years as an employee of the City
of Phoenix. He helped create the Neighborhood
Services Department’s Fight Back Program,
allowing each City of Phoenix council district
to designate a particular area for increased police
presence and city services. In addition, he served
as president of 100 Black Men of Phoenix, an organization
that supports education and economic opportunities
for African-Americans.
