Frequently Asked Questions about See My ID

How will See my ID affect me?

You will be prompted to select your challenge questions and answers upon your next login to CU Online. These challenge questions will be used for See my ID, and also as questions that you can use to reset your own CU Online password through the forgotten password feature.

If you share your account with any joint owners, please be sure to share the answer to your challenge questions with them, or choose them together. They will likely need the answers in order to successfully login to the account in the future.

Once you’ve enrolled one computer in See my ID, you’ll have activated this feature. This means that the next time you use a different computer to access your account, you will be presented with the challenge questions before a successful login can be completed. Once you pass through the challenge questions, you can proceed to the User Options feature and click the link to add the enhanced security protection of See my ID to that computer as well. Or, you can choose not to enroll that computer – but you’ll be presented with the challenge questions during future login attempts.

What is a “challenge question”?

You'll be asked to select challenge questions upon your first login to CU Online. We’ll then present you with these questions for you to answer in either of the following scenarios:

  • You forget your password and attempt to reset it yourself through our automated Forgotten Password feature.

  • You attempt to login to your account from a computer that does not have the Device ID installed on it.

The challenge questions vary in their complexity so be sure to choose questions that you feel add security to your account, but also questions that you’ll remember the answer to. If you share your account with any joint owners, please be sure to share the answer to your challenge questions with them, or choose them together. They will likely need the answers in order to successfully login to the account in the future.

Why did you implement this?

The Federal Financial Institutions Examination Council (which includes the FDIC and the National Credit Union Administration or NCUA) has issued guidance to all financial institutions that requires additional authentication beyond account number/username and password if particular information or transactions are made available online.

We have chosen See my ID, which is a Device ID approach, because we believe it to be among the least intrusive of the possible alternatives. For the majority of our members, the feature will work seamlessly behind the scenes once the enrollment process is complete.

We plan to introduce even more new and exciting features to CU Online in the future. They will provide you with even greater access to your account(s). Because of the technologies these features will utilize, we feel it's prudent to first provide you with additional layers of security.

Hasn’t my account always been secure?

Yes, your account has been secure. In fact, only 8.3% of identity theft cases originate online. Those who eliminate paper bills, statements and checks, and replace them with online banking alternatives, are at a 10.4% reduced risk of becoming a fraud victim. (2006 Identity Fraud Survey Report completed by Javelin Strategy and Research, January, 2006).

However, as new technologies emerge it becomes prudent for all financial institutions to take additional measures to protect their members’ personal and account information.

My other financial institutions aren’t requiring this, why?

All financial institutions must comply with the guidance by implementing some form of additional authentication. The individual solutions will vary between institutions. We have chosen a solution that we believe will be the least intrusive to the largest number of our members.

What is the Device ID?

The Device ID is a cryptographically secure piece of data that is stored in the form of a cookie. This cookie-based credential is a unique identifier of you as an end user. It is encrypted, and no externally identifiable member information is stored in it.

Will I delete the Device ID if I delete my browser cookies?

Possibly. It depends on the configuration of your browser and the settings on your particular computer. If the Device ID is deleted you can simply re-enroll in the feature to restore it. This takes just a few moments to do. Most anti-virus/spyware programs that have been tested do not remove the Device ID cookie.

If you are using a program or setting that automatically deletes cookies, and it is impacting the Device ID, you may be able to resolve this by downloading a Macromedia/Adobe Flash Player. The See my ID Device ID is programmed to copy itself as a flash object if it detects a Flash Player on the computer. Flash Players can be downloaded free of charge from the following web site:

http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/

You may have to re-enroll in the See my ID feature in order for this setting to take affect. To do so, please contact us at (602) 683-1088.

How many computers can I enroll in See my ID?

There is no limit to the number of computers you enroll in See my ID. If you frequently use four different computers to access your account, you can and should enroll all four. However, once you enroll the first computer, you will have to complete the challenge questions prior to accessing your account from each additional computer.

How do I enroll a new computer in See my ID?

Using the computer you wish to enroll, login to your account by completing the challenge questions. Once you have successfully accessed your account, click the User Options feature at the top right corner of the screen. Click the link to add the enhanced security protection of See my ID to that computer.
